Cosmetics Residuals

Are there any residuals in cosmetics production?

Do you know? The cosmetics industries generate a lot of plastic waste from their production. The hold-up of a cosmetic product depends mainly on its packaging. If the product comes in luxurious and appealing packaging, it will attract the customers to buy it. It is why cosmetics products on the market nowadays come in hard plastic cases with many tiny components. All made out of plastic!

What is worse? The plastic used as the packaging comes in many different types, and not all are recyclable. That leaves the customers no choice but to pursue their purchase. Even the customers who are dedicated enough to dismantle the whole thing have no choice too.

The sad truth is, a cosmetic product we use for a couple of months comes in a plastic that will be around for longer than we would be alive. Although some companies have started to become more aware of the residuals produce from cosmetics production, many more are still not taking the case into account. As the cosmetics industry is rapidly growing, more and more plastic waste will counter the world!

Plastic is in the top list of residuals from cosmetics production. Is there anything else?

There is! Many companies nowadays are cashing in on the word natural to describe their product. It is one of the marketing strategies to allude the attention of the customers to buy the products. Only a few natural ingredients will be extracted and later used in the products, meanwhile, the rest of the ingredients in the products are overflowing with many chemicals that the eyes cannot see. They also come in minimal decorated packaging, and all these make the products look natural.

Here is how it works. As the companies are seeking out more natural ingredients so they can put them in their products, the demands for the ingredients will increase rapidly and at one point, it will reach an unsustainable level. In order to fulfill the demands, more farming should be carried out. As the natural ingredients will take some time to be fully ready for a harvest, along with the overflowing demands of the products, the companies have no choice but to make an instant production of the ingredients. They want it to be faster and cheaper!

More pesticides are being sprayed during farming to prevent damages to the ingredients. The chemicals sprayed on the Earth will later be absorbed and resulting in pollution to the soil. Not only it will cause pollutions, but the ecosystem is also disrupted by the residuals.

    1. The company role is to invent new ways of packaging their products. For example, using the bio-based plastics (plastics made from plant or other biological material instead of petroleum), and biodegradable plastics as they are more environment-friendly. As a consumer, we have the choice to refuse the non-necessary plastic packaging, and reduce dependence on the traditionally single-use plastic item like refilling.
